If you love discovering hidden gems and cheering on hardworking creatives, this post is for you. Today, we’re talking about how to support indie authors: the writers who bring passion, creativity, and heart to every page, often without the backing of a big publisher.

What is an indie author?
“Indie” stands for independent, and it can mean a couple of things:
- Indie-published authors work with small independent presses—companies that publish books on a smaller scale than the big five publishers.
- Self-published authors do everything (or mostly everything) themselves. That includes writing, editing, formatting, designing, publishing, and marketing, often all on their own dime.
I fall into the second category. Every book in The Chronicles of Tanithor series was written, edited, formatted, and designed by me. From the map to the covers to the marketing, I handle it all. Many indie authors wear these same hats, pouring endless hours and energy into bringing their stories to readers.
Why Supporting Indies Matters
Indie authors typically don’t have big marketing budgets or dedicated publicity teams. Most rely on word-of-mouth and reader support to get noticed.
While indie publishers may have some promotional resources, self-published authors often invest more time and money into their books than they’ll earn in the first few years. Every share, review, and recommendation helps bridge that gap and truly makes a difference.
Easy Ways to Support Indie Authors
1. Read Indie Books
The best place to start! Explore indie titles through my Clean Fantasy Romance Library or by browsing hashtags like #indieauthor, #selfpublishedauthor, or #indiebooks on Instagram.
Many indie books are available through Kindle Unlimited, so if you’re subscribed, you’re already supporting authors with every page you read.
2. Leave Ratings and Reviews
A short, simple review can go a long way! Even a few words like “Loved this book! Highly recommend!” helps other readers discover it and encourages the author to keep writing. Post your review on Amazon, Goodreads, BookBub, or wherever you read. Bonus points if you include a fun photo or tag the author on social media!
3. Request Indie Books at Your Library
Ask your local librarian how to request a title. They’ll usually have a simple form to fill out. You can also donate a copy of your favorite indie book to help it reach more readers.
4. Follow and Engage Online
Connect with your favorite indie authors on Instagram, Facebook, or through their email newsletters. (You can sign up for mine here for exclusive updates and free book extras!)
5. Share Their Posts and Reels
Social media reach is everything. By sharing an author’s post, reel, or story, you’re helping them find new readers. Some authors even have “share teams” or “street teams” for fans who want to help spread the word—mine included!
6. Post About Indie Books
Whether you’re a bookstagrammer, booktoker, or just love posting about what you’re reading, mention the indie authors you enjoy. Word-of-mouth is powerful! You never know who might pick up a book because of your recommendation.
7. Start an Indie Book Club
Gather your reader friends and dedicate a club to indie books! Reading and discussing indie titles together is a great way to boost sales and discover amazing stories.
8. Buy (and Gift) Their Books
If you’re able, purchase a copy, or all the editions! Paperbacks, hardcovers, digital copies, or even special editions and swag all help support the author’s work. Even reading via Kindle Unlimited supports indies, since they earn per page read. And whenever you can, buy direct from the author. Doing so often saves you money and supports the author’s small business!
📣 Be An Indie Cheerleader
Supporting indie authors doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming. A single review, a social media share, or a kind message can mean the world to an author working hard to share their stories with readers like you.
Every bit of support adds up and helps ensure more incredible books make their way into the world.
